What is STRIVE?

STRIVE is a motivational scholarship program for targeted seniors at Geneseo High School. Geneseo Rotary Club sponsors this program with support from Black Hawk College. The Guidance Counselors at the high school are instrumental in supporting the STRIVE program.

To be eligible for the program, senior students must first be invited to participate and secondly complete a commitment form. Commitment forms will be available at the first meeting and in the guidance office afterward. This form states they must meet criteria to be eligible for the scholarship:

  1. Maintain a minimum of a ā€œCā€ average.

  2. Have a school attendance record of 90% or better.

  3. Improve his/her grade point average (GPA).

  4. Attend Strive monthly meetings

  5. The winners must have a passing grade in all classes

These students have been identified as those who have the ability to improve these areas just by extending a little more effort, or STRIVING a little harder for success. The students meet monthly with Rotarians, at which time they hear from guest speakers who share their life stories, including challenges they have faced and obstacles overcome. Our job as Rotarians is to tell these students we believe in them, to show them our support and give encouragement.

The STRIVE Scholarship winner is the student who has completed the commitment form, maintained at least a ā€œCā€ average, who has improved his/her GPA the most during the first three quarters of their senior year and has a passing grade in all classes. Finally, school attendance is required 90% or higher to receive the scholarship. He or she must also attend 5 out of 6 of the Strive Meetings between Oct. 4th and March 7th.

The first place winner of the STRIVE Scholarship receives a one-year tuition scholarship to Black Hawk College. In addition, monetary scholarships ranging from $500 to $1000 are awarded to successful Strive participants on behalf of Rotary. If the first place winner is not attending Black Hawk, then he or she will win a monetary scholarship to the college of their choice and the second place winner would be eligible for the Black Hawk Scholarship.

Meetings will be held in the GHS Library ~ 10:38 am to 11:02 am
